The Ceylon College of Physicians came into being on the 25th of July 1967 in the Consultants lounge of the NHSL (then General Hospital Colombo). The inaugural meeting was held on the 26th of September 1967. The transactions of the Ceylon College of Physicians was our first journal (in 1967), later re-launched as the Journal of the Ceylon College of Physicians in 1975.The CCP became the first examining body outside the UK to offer MRCP examination, which it has held since 1971.We now have grown with our own home at Rajagiriya and have more than 600 members. We are leaders in the field of CPD and have a biannual journal and a newsletter for our membership.
The CCP is committed to excellence in medical care in Sri Lanka. We are a non profit making organization of volunteers who come together to encourage continuing professional development (CPD),high degree of standards in clinical practice, and lobbying for good governance.Whatever we have achieved has been possible through the responsibility of our cooperate partners. We' are one of the most active academic organizations in the country. As we celebrate 40 years of commitment, we wish to revamp and enhance our services and quality this year. As we do this we realize that the effect trickles down to the profession, society and to patients.

"The emblem of the College consists of a circular petal design. The petals are of the Nelum Flower (Nelumbo) seen in many oriental carvings and denotes purity. It is also significant that the Goddess of learning Saraswathi is depicted seated on a Lotus.Inside petal design is the mythical medicine pot. The earthenware pot is associated with water, the liquid that sustains life. Inside the pot are depicted the traditional lamp of learning and the internationally accepted symbol of the snake and staff. The sanskirt motto reads as "Arogyam Shanthi Sukham" this is closest to "Cure Relief Comfort' of Hippocratic thought."

Message From The President

Dear Fellows and Members,

With great pleasure I send this brief message to our college webpage. During the last six months in the office, I realize the amount of work the CCP has to perform and the responsibilities we have to take when it comes to major decisions in the health care sector of this country. Council members as well as other Fellows and Members have unconditionally extended their support to achieve these goals. I understand that they face incredible demands on their time. They have to juggle patient care, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, lot of paperwork and personal commitments. Despite these all have rallied around the CCP. Volunteers are fundamental to the success of the college and I, wholeheartedly, value their contribution and dedication.

Professor Sarath Lekamwasam

President/CCP
