Dr. Rienzil Piyasena was born on 1st March 1936, educated at St. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia and passed the final MBBS examination of the Colombo Medical Faculty in 1962 with Second Class Honours. He was awarded the Garvin Gold Medal in Operative Surgery at the final examination. He had his Post Graduate studies at the Middlesex Hospital, London where he specialized in Nuclear Medicine. On his return he served at the MRI, Colombo and the Faculty of Medicine, Peradeniya, where he was a pioneer Nuclear Medicine Consultant. In 1980 he joined the International Atomic Energy Agency and worked in Burma and Latin America and later at the Head Quarters in Vienna till 1997. He received the “Distinguished Service Award” from that International Agency. After his retirement, he helped to establish the Radioimmunoassay Services at the Galle Medical Faculty and was a catalyst for the development of Nuclear Medicine in Peradeniya, Colombo and the Ruhuna. He was a accomplished authority on Buddhist Philosophy and appeared regularly on radio and television, where he expounded the basics of Buddhism.
